The Lovestrong Scholarship was established in 2012 by the Smith family in memory of Leslie Smith, a beloved mother of two former H2oyas who passed away from cancer in 2011. This scholarship honors her legacy and the spirit of resilience she embodied, as well as the dedication of Naval Commander Chris Kalafut, who died in 2014 while serving in the Middle East. Chris's family, deeply connected to the H2oyas, has inspired this scholarship's mission.
The Lovestrong Scholarship aims to recognize Harrison swimmers and divers who have faced personal challenges yet continue to exhibit a commitment to their community, kindness toward others, and a positive outlook. Each year, senior athletes are invited to apply by writing an essay that reflects how their experiences align with the values of Leslie Smith and Chris Kalafut.
The selection committee, comprised of friends and colleagues of Chris Kalafut, ensures confidentiality and impartiality by not involving anyone directly connected to the Harrison High School Swim & Dive Booster Club in the essay review process. The committee can award two senior athletes with the scholarship each year.
